Lake James guide
A lake day, your way.
Make Lake James the centerpiece of a day away from the house: a paddle, a picnic, or a swim when the beach is open. Pick an access point before you leave.
Choose your access
Lake James State Park lists the Paddy's Creek and Catawba River areas, boat ramps, current notices and maps. Check the location for your activity rather than using a general lake destination.
Swim or paddle
The park's swim beach is seasonal. Check operating dates and fees before planning a beach day.
Paddleboards and inflatable kayaks are listed for use by retreat guests. Confirm equipment, transport and properly fitting life jackets with your hosts. Select conditions and a route that suit everyone's experience.
Add a walk or a picnic
A short park walk can round out the day without packing the schedule. See our hiking guide for a starting point.
Bring along
- Towels, dry clothes and sun protection.
- Water, snacks or a picnic.
- Suitable life jackets for water activities.
- A bag for wet gear and a bag for your trash.
Check before leaving
Use the park's official activity information and our weather and lake resources. A forecast is not a guarantee of safe water conditions.
For an angling trip, see the fishing guide.
