Biking & Fonta Flora
Find your next ride around Lake James.
The Lake James area offers natural-surface riding and access to the developing Fonta Flora State Trail. Pick an open segment that matches your group's skill and equipment.
Start with the official map
NC Trails: Fonta Flora State Trail provides the corridor map and links to access information.
The full Morganton-to-Asheville route is a project in progress. A line on the corridor map can represent a planned connection; do not assume it is a continuous open ride or completed lake loop.
Riding at Lake James
Lake James State Park lists bike-trail status and maps. Check those notices on the day you ride, since weather and repair work can affect access.
Choose an out-and-back or confirmed loop, identify parking and decide where to turn around before you leave.
Match the ride to the group
Natural-surface trails can include roots, hills and uneven ground. For newer riders or children, check the surface and difficulty of the specific segment rather than relying on a broad “family-friendly” label.
Bring your riding kit
- Helmets and bikes suited to the selected terrain.
- Water, snacks and a basic repair kit.
- A downloaded map and charged phone.
- A plan to respect closures and avoid damaging wet trails.
Make a day of it
Leave time after the ride for a meal and a quiet afternoon back at the retreat. Browse the Lake James guide or plan your stay for another day's outing.
