Hiking the linville gorge
Shortoff Mountain Retreat is a short walk to the Wolf Pit Trailhead that accesses the Linville Gorge
The cabin is located within a short walk to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in North Carolina. The Wolf Pit trailhead is designated by the parking area on the map above. The hike to the Shortoff Mountain overlook is 2.2 miles from the front door of the cabin. The trail has an elevation gain of about 1000′, which adds to the difficulty of the hike. The trail is a very popular hiking location and the path is well-defined and maintained. On a warm, sunny day there might be 40-60 cars parked along Wolf Pit Rd.

The Wolf Pit Trailhead parking area is marked with the “P” box, approximately a half-mile from the cabin.
Serious hikers can continue along the trail on Shortoff Mountain to Table Rock.
The Linville Gorge Trail is 28.6 mile trail loop along scenic ridgelines above the Linville Gorge River.
The trail traverses Table Rock, a waterfall, and numerous climbing and bouldering routes.
Wolf Pit Trail makes up one of the segments located on the southeast portion of the loop.
